Afghan Center
Through its “Women of the World” project, this organization provides
“rights awareness” training for the women of Afghanistan. It works
to empower women to understand their rights and mobilize them to
improve the quality of life in Afghanistan. In 2008, they will focus
on expanding women’s rights and freedoms in three areas, including
Afghan civil law, Islamic law, and Afghan culture.
Afghan Women Judges Association
UUSC supports AWJA’s work in two Hearat Province girls’ high
schools. By providing training to these future leaders, the
association will have a direct impact on legal representation for
Muslim women and children, especially female children who are
typically marginalized in their culture. AWJA also provides a base
of support to Afghanistan’s women lawyers and judges.
Asuda
Asuda is an organization based in Kurdistan (currently the only
region of Iraq where women are permitted to openly organize) that
combats violence against women. UUSC supports Asuda’s work in rights
training and to combat violence against women. In addition to
intervention to end violence and discrimination against women, Asuda
conducts research and studies to affect policy goals for civil
society groups.
Humanitarian Assistance for Women and Children of Afghanistan
HAWCA protects the rights of women and children in Afghanistan. They
provide lobbying efforts for women’s rights through the legal
framework of national and international conventions on women’s
rights.
Sudanese Mothers for Peace
This organization works to expand the political rights of women,
especially with regard to their representation by political leaders.
Their goal is to enhance the participation of women in Sudan’s
political process.
People opposed to rendition and torture
Maya Achi Association for the Integral Development of Victims of
Violence
UUSC supports ADIVIMA’s efforts to combat injustice resulting from
abuse by the Guatemalan government, including the massacre at Rio
Negro, and land and property “stolen” because of the Chixoy Dam
project. UUSC also supports ADIVIMA’s pursuit of voting rights for
the indigenous people of Rabinal.
National Religious Campaign against Torture
To further our work to stop the use of torture, cruel, and inhuman
treatment, UUSC supports the work of NRCAT to increase and mobilize
the participation of national, regional, and local religious and
secular organizations.
Sudan Organization against Torture
UUSC supports SOAT’s work with the people of Darfur who have been
displaced by the ongoing genocide. SOAT provides assistance,
information, and represents the rights of the people of Darfur.
Torture Abolition Survivors Support Coalition
UUSC supports the TASSC network of torture survivors who provide
public education and testimony to the U.S. Congress, U.N.
committees, and other international bodies.
Civil liberties, youth, and young people
Hands Across the Mideast Support Alliance
This UUSC program partner works with Muslim youth and young people
by building bridges with their U.S. counterparts. Together, they
will deepen understanding for people of all backgrounds, to secure
civil liberties and rights for people in the Middle East.
Defending civil liberties in the United States
Democracy Talking
This program partner has evolved from its start as a project of a UU
congregation in Portland, Ore., into an independent nonprofit
organization. Through this partnership, UUSC facilitates training
and curriculum development to understand democracy and DT provides
opportunities to engage democratic processes in the United States.
Muslim Advocates
UUSC supports the work of this program partner to use the U.S. legal
and political process to promote equality, liberty, and justice for
all. Muslim Advocates provides leadership through legal advocacy,
policy engagement, and civic education. UUSC supports Muslim
Advocates’ work to be a legal resource that promotes the full and
meaningful participation of Muslims in U.S. public life.
Civil liberties and patriotism
Appeal for Redress
This program partner represents active duty military personnel whose
civil liberties (e.g., freedom of speech and freedom of assembly)
are threatened. Most members of Appeal for Redress have served in
the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and are opposed to the Iraq War.
UUSC supports their efforts, which include public education programs
and public demonstrations.
Veterans for Peace
UUSC supports the work of Veterans for Peace and their “Where’s the
Rage?” project. By providing educational materials and speaking at
public events, Veterans for Peace advances opposition to the Iraq
War and offers opportunities to communities to participate in
dissent and debate about the Global War on Terror.
