Contentious Mining Operations by Newmont Mining

UUSC signed a
letter to Newmont Mining Board Chair Simon Thompson. Outlined in the letter are changes we are seeking to have made in a report to shareholders based on the company's
extensive work to review its relationships with communities at some of its most
contentious mine sites. In prior correspondence, we had suggested review of the
format that was used by BP and its Advisory Panel in the Tangguh reports where
BP directly responded to the recommendations put forth by the Advisory Panel in
order to demonstrate accountability and to show responsiveness. We also
recommend that Newmont hold stakeholder dialogue meetings in select locations in
the U.S. and in the communities to review
the report that is distributed at the AGM. A PDF of the letter is attached below.
