UUSC commends the outstanding efforts of local activists working to
advance human rights and social justice in their communities.
In order to encourage their
activism and leadership, the Unitarian Universalist Service
Committee grants three annual
awards: the Social Action Leadership Award, the Mary-Ella
Holst Youth Activist Award, and the Seminarian Award for Excellence
in Social Justice.
In addition to receiving a cash award of $500, winners
are honored at UUSC’s annual membership meeting, which is
held during the Unitarian Universalist Association
General Assembly. This year’s General Assembly is scheduled
for June 25-29, 2008, in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

The
Social Action Leadership Award honors creative,
inspiring, and effective leadership by an individual or group
working for justice. The recipient(s) must have demonstrated an
outstanding model of committed and effective action relating to UUSC
programs, priorities, and public-policy positions.
Last year’s winner
was Rev. Dr. Richard Gilbert, of Rochester, N.Y., a minister,
ethicist, author, and activist who helped his church develop a model
for social-justice ministry that has been replicated by other UU
congregations.

The Mary-Ella Holst Youth
Activist Award recognizes and
honors the achievement of an individual or group of youth who are
advancing human rights and social justice through activism and
leadership. Recipient(s) must have demonstrated a commitment to
social justice and human rights through participation in a UUSC
program of service, action, and/or advocacy.
Last year’s winner was Sam Bryson-Brockmann,
of South Nassau UU Congregation in Freeport, N.Y., a high school
student involved in both fundraising and consciousness raising. He
created opportunities for his fellow students and congregants to
contribute to campaigns such as Gulf Coast recovery and ending the
Darfur genocide. He even raised money to help pay the way for other
youth to participate in UUSC’s
JustWorks Camp in the Gulf Coast.

The
Seminarian Award for Excellence in Social Justice recognizes
and honors the exemplary work of a seminarian who advances the
mission of UUSC by linking and integrating the work of UUSC with the
Principles and Purposes of the UUA and the spiritual lives of UUs.
In addition to
being a seminarian, last year’s winner, Renee Zimelis Ruchotzke,
of Meadville Lombard Theological Seminary, also worked as the
interim director of religious education at East Shore Unitarian
Universalist Church in Kirtland, Ohio. She organized a program of
exploration and reflection around the human right to water. She also
ran a very successful
Guest at Your Table campaign
that increased her congregation’s contributions by 24 percent in one
year!
