New Native American workcamp
set with Lakota in South Dakota

The Unitarian Universalist Service Committee is pleased to announce an exciting Just Works opportunity for volunteers to learn about and work with the Lakota community on the Rosebud Reservation in South Dakota. This experiential learning opportunity is sponsored by UUSC in partnership with the Unitarian Universalist Church of the Lehigh Valley, Bethlehem, Pa., and members of the Lakota community of Norris, S.D.

The workcamp will be held in two weeklong sessions, the first from July 30-Aug. 6 and the second from Aug. 6-13. Workcampers will learn about the modern lives of the Lakota people and will be given the opportunity to work with members of the community on projects they have identified as priorities. This summer we will work alongside the youth of Norris to convert a building into a local youth center. The work may include carpentry, painting, cleaning, planting, etc.

We will learn about the history of the Lakota Nation in South Dakota, past and present, through a number of presentations and conversations with community activists. Just Works participants will learn valuable advocacy skills that they can take back to their own communities. The intergenerational workcamp is open to anyone 16 years old or older.

During each session of the UUSC-Lakota Workcamp, we will be sleeping in tents and eating communally. While all your needs will be comfortably met (meals, tools, drinking water, etc.) you may experience some sense of hardship at the workcamp. We will be in a small town some distance from stores and other conveniences. Please take this information into account when deciding to attend this camp if you have major dietary, medical, or mobility limitations.

Just Works has brought more than 2,000 people into communities across the United States that are struggling with environmental injustice, racism, poverty and other major social issues.

The cost for the UUSC-Lakota Workcamp is $300 per week and UUSC will provide transportation to and from the Rapid City Airport. Each session is limited to 20 participants so sign up now!
