AGENCY OVERVIEW
The Unitarian Universalist
Service Committee is a powerful voice for social justice and human
rights in the United States and abroad. Founded in 1939, we have
challenged injustice in more than 50 countries on four continents
over the course of the past six decades. Today, our programs promote
workers' rights, advance the human right to water, defend civil
liberties, and preserve the rights of those affected by humanitarian
crises.
UUSC works for social justice and human rights through an effective
combination of advocacy, education, and partnership. Rather than
imposing our ideas on our program partners, we offer local
organizations and leaders the help they need to create long-term
solutions to human rights challenges in their own communities.
Our work with partners in the United States and around the world
shapes our public policy agenda. We train and organize our members
and supporters to effectively advocate for domestic and
international policies that promote human rights. We also provide
financial and technical support when disasters strike, especially
where human rights are threatened.
Grounded in the principles and values of our Unitarian Universalist
founders, UUSC is an independent, membership organization. Our
programs affirm the worth and dignity of every person and are built
on the conviction that all people are entitled to basic human rights
that transcend divisions of class, race, nationality, sexual
orientation, ethnicity, religion, and gender. Anyone wishing to help
support human rights and social justice is welcome to join.
Based in metropolitan Boston, UUSC has developed innovative,
comprehensive approaches to social change. Our current strategic
plan is the culmination of a multiyear process in which the board,
staff, and key stakeholders sought to answer the question, "How is
the world be a better place because UUSC exists?" The resulting plan
provides clear institutional focus and the flexibility needed to
assess and refine program direction in order to meet the challenges
of a rapidly changing world.
A nonsectarian organization, UUSC receives no financial support from
the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) or from the government.
Rather, its members , supporters, and volunteers, as well as
individual congregations and foundations, support the Service
Committee. The UUSC annual budget is approximately $5 million.
