Justice Sunday
Justice Sunday - Sunday, March 29, 2009
In 2009, congregations can choose to focus their Justice Sunday action, education, and worship on any of UUSC's four program areas: Civil Liberties, Economic Justice, Environmental Justice, or Rights in Humanitarian Crises. Or they can incorporate all four areas into their celebration of the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. We will provide resources, inspiring stories, action and educational materials.
About Justice Sunday
Your congregation can change the world! Each spring, Unitarian Universalist congregations nationwide stand together on one pressing human rights issue. By celebrating Justice Sunday, members of your congregation gain in-depth knowledge about an urgent human rights issue and take action steps to advocate for change.
- Justice Sunday 2008 focused on the cost of the Iraq war. The war in Iraq has drained this nation's resources, creating a humanitarian crisis in Iraq, and leaving a multitude needs at home unmet — including the disgraceful lack of resources and commitment to rebuild. Download 2008's materials
- Justice Sunday 2007 focused on the crisis in Darfur, mobilizing congregations to speak out against the genocide and participate in UUSC's Drumbeat for Darfur campaign.
- Justice Sunday 2006 focused on economic justice by supporting labor rights and living wage. Congregations nationwide united in supporting workers' rights.
- Justice Sunday 2005 focused on defending the human right to water, both in the United States and globally. Justice Sunday celebrations nationwide helped many congregants learn about this pressing but rarely discussed human rights issue.
- Justice Sunday 2004 — the first Justice Sunday — brought together UU congregations across the nation to defend human rights in Burma, and included a petition drive calling for justice in the wake of Unocal's pipeline project.
How your congregation can celebrate Justice Sunday
UUSC provides all Justice Sunday resources free of charge. Simple Steps for Justice, the centerpiece of Justice Sunday, will help congregants educate, act, and speak out.
UUSC mails a planning packet to each congregation and each UUSC local representative in January. You can view the materials online here. And you can place your order for worship and program resources, including Simple Steps for Justice, by using the online order form or the postcard included in the packet. (Ordering season begins in January 2009.)
