This tentative schedule will provide you with an idea of some of the activities in which we will be engaged. We aim to meet the educational goals of the JustJourney, but please remember that flexibility and openness to changes are important aspects of this experience.

Thursday, August 2, 2007

  • Arrival in Tuxtla Guerrero by 3:00 p.m. (for international travelers, there is a connection in Mexico City). A staff member will meet participants and then everyone will travel together to San Cristóbal.
  • Travel to San Cristóbal de las Casas. San Cristóbal de las Casas, the former capital of the state of Chiapas, is an attractive colonial city with narrow, cobbled streets located in the central valley highlands. Founded in 1528 as Villa Real de Chiapas, it is a mere 1-1/2- hour drive from the modern capital, Tuxtla Gutierrez, and located in an area surrounded by indigenous villages.
  • Introductions and orientation Getting to know each other; overview of schedule; discussion of indigenous rights, and vision and mission of CASA and UUSC.

  • Friday, August 3, 2007
  • Walking tour of San Cristóbal.
  • Overview of Zapatista movement and current political context.
  • Exploration of the human rights situation in Chiapas.
  • Time to journal.

  • Saturday, August 4, 2007
  • Reflection session.
  • Talk on militarization in Chiapas with CAPISE. CAPISE has documented 70 permanent military camps in indigenous territory.
  • Meet the Chiapas Media Project. For many people who live in the developed world, daily use of video cameras, VCRs, TVs, and computers is common. Indigenous peoples say that access to these technologies is only a dream. We will learn how CMP is trying to put technology in the hands of indigenous peoples.
  • Learn about the consequences of the Plan Puebla Panama.

  • Sunday, August 5, 2007
  • Depart for indigenous communities of Morelia or La Gaucha, Acteal, and others.
  • Share with the community.
  • Overnight stay in the community.

  • Monday, August 6, 2007
  • Conversations with community leaders.
  • Visit community projects.
  • Experience life in an autonomous community and discuss indigenous spirituality.

  • Tuesday, August 7, 2007
  • Return to San Cristóbal.
  • Reflection session.
  • Down time.

  • Wednesday, August 8, 2007
  • Talk with the women from Kinal Antzetik (Land of Women) about their handicrafts project and women’s rights.
  • Visit the Center for the Development of Mayan Medicine (OMEICH).

  • Thursday, August 9, 2007
  • Discussion about indigenous theology and perspectives on religious organizing in Chiapas.
  • Workshop on concepts of privilege and solidarity.

  • Friday, August 10, 2007
  • Final reflection session: How does this experience relate to my ministry and life? What are my next steps?
  • Evaluation of JustJourneys experience.
  • Visit to Nabolom museum, market, etc.
  • Travel to Tuxtla.

  • Departures from Tuxtla Gutierrez.
