Return to the Earth is a nationwide project to identify and
repatriate (return to the earth) the over 110,000 unidentified
Native American human remains currently curated in universities and
museums across the United States.
Participants in the Return to the Earth JustWorks camp will:
Take part in educational sessions with local tribal leaders on U.S.
and Native American history as represented by the Cheyenne Cultural
Center, Clinton, Okla., including the program to repatriate cultural
remains.
Plant grasses, shrubs, and trees used for medicinal and
ceremonial purposes by Native American cultures during the 1860s and
70s. Such plantings will be at a cemetery designed to hold about
20,000 remains.
Paint a steel-pipe fence and two gates surrounding the cemetery to
hold a small herd of buffalo.
Create bricks for headstones.
Perform carpentry on structures at the site.
Set up a computer database to hold cataloging information.
Work on the trail leading to the cemetery, including installation of
information.
Camp details
The camp fee is $400. Scholarships are available on a limited basis.
Participants must be 18 or older.
