"[E]very individual and every organ of society, keeping this Declaration constantly in mind, shall strive by teaching and education to promote respect for these rights and freedoms."
— Universal Declaration of Human Rights
At UUSC we believe in promoting respect for the rights and freedoms of people throughout the world, as spelled out in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). In fact, our mission is guided by the UDHR. We understand the importance of each of its articles. However, in order to do effective work, we have narrowed our focus to four key areas: Economic Justice, Environmental Justice, Civil Liberties, and Rights in Humanitarian Crises. This allows us to strengthen our impact.
We enhance our effectiveness even further by an analysis of the impact of race, class, and gender on those who have had their rights denied or impeded. Our development of partner relationships with nongovernmental organizations and grassroots groups allows us to learn more effective ways of working, to share information, and to better reach those most in need.
By now you might be saying, this is great but what can I do? Your support allows us to do something that many other organizations can not: provide opportunities for you to visit and work in the communities of some of UUSC's partner organizations through our two experiential learning programs: JustWorks and JustJourneys.
Each JustWorks camp and JustJourney is an opportunity for you to learn and be witness to the ways in which UUSC program partners work to promote justice in their communities. By learning and working side-by-side with partners, at their invitation, both you and the community are enriched.
The partners we have worked with are based in the continental United States, Ecuador, Guatemala, and Kenya. Our partners live in cities, rural areas, and on reservations.
During these JustWorks camps and JustJourneys, particular attention is paid to learning about the ways that race, class, and gender impact the way that people are treated as they struggle to obtain or use the rights to which they are entitled.
Ultimately, experiential learning opportunities are designed to give you skills that will help you to improve your own neighborhood, community, and the world.
During this anniversary of the UDHR, we encourage you to become a member of UUSC and participate in an upcoming JustWorks camp or JustJourney!
