Tell the U.S.: Stop Fueling Burmese Junta Atrocities

Months after announcing sanctions against jet fuel, why is there still oil in the tanks of Burmese military jets?

The Burmese junta is waging war on its own people through airstrikes, raining death from the sky on defenseless civilians and villages. In the three years since Burma’s civil war began, the junta has killed or wounded thousands of people by jet strikes alone, in addition to its many other brutal crimes.

In an effort to curb these atrocities, the U.S. announced targeted sanctions last year to block jet fuel sales to Burma. More than a year after these sanctions were announced, however, jet fuel is still ending up in the tanks of the junta’s planes. Evidently, the military found ways to circumvent global sanctions, including by purchasing the fuel from third parties in Vietnam—a U.S. strategic partner.

Plainly, current U.S. efforts to stop fuel and cash flows to the junta are not enough. Tell the Biden administration to do all in his power to stop the jet fuel imports to Burma. The U.S. government must exert diplomatic pressure to ensure no third parties help fuel the junta’s airborne atrocities against its own people.
