Alliance for Black Justice in Poland (BJP) is a coalition of organizations which came together in March 2022 to address the unequal treatment experienced by many Black and Brown people fleeing Ukraine and entering Poland. In the immediate wake of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the coalition organized to respond to the needs of Africans fleeing Ukraine by providing transport from the border areas to cities throughout Poland; advice on legalizing stay in Poland; and help with accessing safe accommodation, healthcare, and other basic services. As mass evacuations from the border ended, BJP’s work has shifted from emergency interventions to longer-term support for Black, African, and Afro-descendant people who decide to stay in Poland.

UUSC’s support for BJP helps the organization address the pressing issue of displacement for people of color in Ukraine as Russia’s full-scale invasion continues. BJP also plays a leadership role in helping Black and Brown people acclimate to life in Poland and navigate issues of assimilation, racism, and citizenship.
