Pacific Island Students Fighting Climate Change (PISFCC)
LOCATION: Solomon Islands
UUSC is supporting the Pacific Island Students Fighting Climate Change (PISFCC) campaign to bring the world’s biggest problem—climate change—to the International Court of Justice (ICJ). PISFCC’s campaign promotes the right to self-determination of Indigenous peoples’ to address climate-forced displacement by leveraging international human rights and justice mechanisms.
PISFCC is informed and led by Pacific island youths, whose voices are often neglected and marginalized in international processes. UUSC’s support helps young people assert their voices and express their frustration at the injustices they are inheriting as future leaders. On March 29, 2023, the United Nations General Assembly voted affirmatively on a resolution encouraging the ICJ to render an official opinion on the state of climate change, nations’ responsibilities in addressing climate change, and the repercussions for not responsibly addressing the impacts of climate change. UUSC will continue to support PISFCC and its youth leaders’ work to ensure an objective and responsive opinion from the ICJ.
